About Goshtarang

‘Goshtarang’ is part of QUEST’s ‘reading writing enhancement program’, which introduces books and authors to students in rural and tribal areas, using theatrical performances based on story books.

Since 2016, young persons trained by theatre experts have performed several shows of stories in Marathi, for Elementary School Children in various districts in rural Maharashtra. They also conduct activities based on the story books so that the children don’t just see the performance but also participate in it and understand the story. Students as well as teachers in all the schools have enjoyed these performances and the activities based on the stories. The teachers are happy that children are now drawn to the written word and have started demanding specific story books!

Goshtarang Fellowship 2019-20

We started ‘Goshtarang Fellowship’ in 2017-18. Based on the heartening response received in the last two years, we are happy to announce the next round of Fellowship this year as well. This fellowship is open for young persons trained in theatre or who have some experience of theatre. Selected candidates will get a chance to work in rural and tribal areas, where there is a scarcity of such activities.

For the 10-month fellowship in 2019-20, we will enrol 5 fellows. They will be trained in a residential workshop on two important aspects:

  1. To perform stories from children’s story books
  2. To conduct ‘Active Library’ activities in the classroom with the children, to sustain their interest in reading & writing

Well known theatre experts such as Chinmay Kelkar, Vidyanidhi Vanarase, Geetanjali Kulkarni and educationist Nilesh Nimkar have been associated with Goshtarang as trainers.

The Fellows will have to stay in a rural setting, work as a team and manage their performances in schools. We will provide a stipend, which would be sufficient to take care of their basic needs and allow them to concentrate on learning without worrying about financial responsibilities.
